The Kentucky State Police Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT) has taken over the investigation into the shootings at a Lexington church Sunday that left three people dead, including the gunman, while three others remain hospitalized.

The first incident occurred just after 11:30 a.m. EDT on Terminal Drive, near Bluegrass Airport, and involved a KSP Trooper. The second incident occurred around 12:30 p.m. EDT at Richmond Road Baptist Church, located at 5899 Old Richmond Road, and involved Lexington Police Department officers.

KSP’s preliminary investigation indicates a KSP Trooper conducted a traffic stop on Terminal Drive. While interacting with the occupants, one of the individuals pulled out a gun and shot the trooper, resulting in serious injuries. The subject was later identified as Guy House, 47, of Lexington, who had active arrest warrants. The other occupants of the vehicle were not involved in the assault of the trooper or fleeing the scene and are cooperating with the investigation.

After he allegedly shot the trooper, House fled the scene and later forcibly stole a vehicle from an individual. Lexington police obtained information indicating the vehicle House had reportedly stolen was near Old Richmond Road in Fayette County.

Around 12:30 p.m., LPD officers located the stolen vehicle at Richmond Road Baptist Church. Officers approached the church where they encountered House in the rear parking lot area, as well as several people with apparent gunshot wounds. Initial information indicates that House shot four victims at the church before encountering the law enforcement officers. At least three LPD officers discharged their agency-issued firearms, striking House, resulting in fatal injuries.

Once the scene was secure, officers began to address the injuries of the victims and House and attempted to provide life-saving measures. Two of the four victims were pronounced dead at the scene by the Fayette County Coroner and have been identified as Beverly Gumm, 72, and Kristina Combs, 34. Also shot and injured were Gumm’s husband and the longtime pastor of the church, Jerry Gumm, and Combs’ husband, Randy Combs. The two men are reported to be in critical condition. Jerry Gumm has been the pastor at Richmond Road Baptist Church for 49 years.
