JCPL hosts Beatlemania event Saturday
To celebrate the 50th anniversary of The Beatles’ Abbey Road album, Jessamine County Public Library will host Beatlemania this weekend.
“Somebody mentioned that there is a 50th anniversary of Abbey Road Sept. 27 and asked if we were going to do anything,” Grant Laufenburger, marketing director for JCPL said. “Tons of people asked us for more dances. Our Valentine’s Day dance was a huge success.”
For the event, Laufenburger said the library has worked to find a Beatles cover band, create trivia, 1960s fashion and Beatles singing contests.
The event is free and will be held from 4 to 8:30 p.m. Sept. 7 at 600 S. Main St. A Beatles Song Singing Contest will take place from 4 to 5:30 p.m.; Crowd-Picked 1960s Costume Winner is scheduled for 5:30 to 6 p.m. and a Beatlemania Dance will fill JCPL with the sounds of the 60s from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. when a Beatle’s cover band, The Apples, will perform. The Apples are a Cincinnati-based Beatles tribute band who dress and sing just like the Beatles.
“There are very few bands or ideas that are as cross-culturally connected as the Beatles,” Laufenburger said. “Their music is danceable, and everybody can get into it.”
Although Laufenburger said he does not know if the event will be held in years to come, JCPL is expected to attract around 300 people this Saturday who wish to come out and experience the Fab Four.
“If you are a fan of the 60s in general, and if you are musician there is a chance to perform,” Laufenburger said.
“It is going to be super fun. There will be prizes, dancing and more. JCPL has done many events like this in the past and will continue to host events like this in years to come. JCPL is always looking for more community input for ways to improve our events, or for ideas for future events.”
