I want to begin by thanking you for your service — for stepping up to make a positive impact upon our community. I am sure that was the motive of your hearts when you ran for office.

I have not come to cast blame, argue or manipulate in any way.

The only way I am interested in is the Lord’s way.

When I heard a rumor the decision was made to finance a new jail via taxing the people — perhaps as much as 10 percent on property tax — and that this issue was never brought to the people for discussion, I was greatly troubled.

I was later told there was not a vote thus far. However, the decision I was addressing concerned the vote that was taken by the magistrates (two in favor, four against) on whether or not to make this discussion open to and known by the public.

It felt like this was a move to sweep the issue under the rug, perhaps because of the upcoming election. I was deeply saddened and have spent considerable time over the past several weeks praying about if I should respond and what my response might be.

The Lord continued to prod me to come, and actually, I thought it was (Judge-Executive David) West’s decision. I met with him a couple weeks ago where he explained the magistrates were the deciding factor.

About 3 a.m. this morning, I awoke with the words “Boston tea party” on my mind —taxation without representation. Of course, we supposedly have representation. You were voted into office to represent us. Yet we were never given an opportunity to respond on this issue.

To me, this is an abuse of power. So, I leave you with my perspective and my prayers:

“Father, I thank you for these civil servants. I ask you to continue to bless them with humble hearts that they will seek you in their decision making, that they would indeed do justice throughout their terms of office. Lord, let them know afresh how much you love them, and remind them you have called them to this office for such a time as this. In Jesus’ name, amen.”
