Just before KCAL Old Time Radio’s Christmas Show, Jessamine County Fiscal Court Judge Executive David West proclaimed December 12 – December 15, 2024 as KCAL Old Time Radio Show Weekend.
This proclamation came just in time for the troupe’s 10 year anniversary this month, after being founded in 2014. At the time, the troupe provided live theater plays based on old radio series episodes to the Creative Art League. When the Creative Art League closed in 2018, the troupe continued providing its family-friendly entertainment on Main Street.
According to the proclamation, KCAL has received awards from media in Central Kentucky such as Best Place to Take Visitors, Best Place to Take Family, Best Kept Secrets, and Best Non-Profit Organizations.
In addition to providing multiple shows every year, KCAL organizes an annual Gospel Showcase at the beginning of each December. Proceeds from the events have raised $37,200 for the Jessamine County Schools Homeless Education Program for homeless children in Jessamine County. This year, the event’s donations total was $10,700.
KCAL Producer and Co-Director, Doug Fain, said the audience really outdid themselves. “Shainey Marcus, the director of the homeless education program and Superintendent Sara Crum are over the moon about it.”
“When we started KCAL, we had hoped to maybe last for a couple of years. Never did we dream we would still be going strong after a decade. But even more important than that, never did we think that our mission would be not only to bring wholesome, family entertainment to our community but to be able to put on a show that would raise tens of thousands of dollars for these unfortunate children in our schools. While our cast members will always want to be remembered for our radio plays, we hope our legacy will always include helping those kids,” Fain said.
