Students arrived back on campus this week, with womens basketball, mens basketball, and mens and womens swimming resuming action into the new year.

Mens basketball

Asbury freshman guards Kirk Lemons and Tyler Hall scored career-highs while Dakota Walden had his fifth 20-plus point game this season on Saturday, Jan. 6th in Batavia, Oh., but the Asbury men’s basketball team (9-7) slipped to the University of Cincinnati-Clermont (11-4), 82-87. Both teams exploded in the second half for 50 and 54 points, but the Cougars’ 49% shooting from the field proved to be too much.

Dakota Walden scored 22 points (8-14 FG) with two rebounds, two steals, and an assist. Ben McNew went 6-12 from the field for 16 points and grabbed four rebounds. Freshman Tyler Hall scored 10 points on 4-7 shooting with two rebounds, an assist, a steal, and a block. Freshman Kirk Lemons made three threes (3-3) for nine points, being a key spark late in the game for AU. Clayton Winter grabbed 10 rebounds with four assists (his 10th game this season with double-digit rebounds).

Womens basketball

Trinity Shearer scored 25 points on Tuesday afternoon to help propel Asbury (9-7) to a 80-52 win over the College of the South (2-10) on Tuesday, Jan. 2nd. Trinity Shearer led the Eagles with 25 points (11-17 FG), seven assists, and five steals. Camryn Preston scored 13 points, grabbed seven rebounds, and came away with two steals. Haleigh Releford tallied 12 points, seven rebounds, and three steals. Morgan Flannery added seven points and three assists. Spencer Harvey recorded five points, four rebounds, and five steals.

Fifteen points from Abigail Harris and Haleigh Releford partnered with a 28-point third-quarter burst proved to be enough, as Asbury women’s basketball defeated UC-Clermont (6-5), 81-62 on Saturday. The win accelerates the Eagles to a perfect 2-0 in the new calendar year. Haleigh Releford poured in with 15 points (3-7 3PT), six rebounds, and three steals. Abigail Harris scored 15 points, grabbed seven rebounds, and came away with three steals off the bench. Trinity Shearer tallied 11 points, six rebounds, and three assists. Morgan Flannery dished out six assists and gathered four steals. Ma’Kiya West recorded five points and five rebounds. Camryn Preston added six points and four rebounds in the win.

Mens and Womens swimming

Asbury senior Ian Wang took a second-place finish in the mens 100 breaststroke and a third-place finish in the 200 butterfly to lead AU men’s (fifth place) and women’s (fourth place) in the Colonel Classic in Danville. The women ranked fifth in the 200 freestyle relay as well. The Eagles collected five top-five finishes at the Colonel Classic with Wang tallying three of those in his 50 free, 100 breast, and 200 butterfly.
