Two student-athletes named NCCAA All-Americans and baseball’s six-game winning streak highlight the week that was in Asbury athletics.

Awards

Asbury men’s basketball forward Nick Fort and women’s basketball guard Trinity Shearer were recently named National Christian College Athletics Association (NCCAA) All-Americans for the 2022-2023 season.

Fort, a graduate student from Shelbyville, averaged 23.9 points – second in NCCAA – and 10.6 rebounds – first in NCCAA – was honored as a First Team NCCAA All-American.

Shearer, a junior from Stanford, averaged 13.3 points and finished second in Asbury school history for steals in a season with 75 to be recognized as a Third Team NCCAA All-American.

Baseball   

March 21 – Starting out strong this week, the Asbury baseball team beat Wilmington College and reached double-digit hits for the fifth game in a row. Junior Kaden Dugle was Tuesday’s top performer with two doubles and a home run. With a final score of 15-5, Asbury moved to 10-10 on the season.

March 23 – Asbury swept IUPUC Thursday night at home with 13-12 and 22-5 wins. Twenty-seven hits and only one error on the day led AU to their second consecutive sweep. Ten different Eagles secured hits. The victories moved Asbury’s record to 12-10. AU has scored 92 combined runs in their six-game winning streak.

Softball

March 21 – Although Tuesday’s first game saw solid offense from junior Taylor Enlow and senior Olivia Palasek, the Eagles fell to Hanover College at home. In the second game of the night, Asbury grabbed 12 hits, an improvement from the first game, but could not get the win. With a 12-5 loss, the Eagles moved to 5-17 on the season and look to secure a win against Spalding on Saturday.

Men’s and Women’s Track & Field

March 25 – Saturday’s weather conditions made it hard for the Eagles to achieve peak performance. However, that did not stop sophomore Katherine Stanley from running the fifth fastest time in Asbury’s history for the 5000-meter run. Her time of 20:19.55 qualified her for the postseason NCCAA National Championship competition.

Freshman David Brown also achieved an NCCAA National qualifier with a time of 1:58.50 in the 800-meter run.

Asbury’s victory of the day was earned by the men’s 4×400 Relay team consisting of Sam Webb, Luke Holton, Brown, and Luke Wheatley. Wheatley finished off the race with an anchor leg of 50.3 seconds.

Golf

March 25-26 – The Battlefield Golf Course in Richmond, Indiana, hosted nine teams for the two-day Alice Loyd Spring Invitation tournament. Competing for the second time in the spring season, Asbury women’s golf placed ninth.

After a disappointing outcome, head coach Scott Ferguson said, “We are very thankful we had the opportunity to compete and will be working toward our next round.”
