The heavy rain, snow and ice of late winter hindered builders, but The Hayden Company expects to make up for lost time on a big project, the new $7 million Nicholasville Police Department building on North Main Street.
On a sunny Monday morning, the site was bustling with activity as Hayden’s workers were laying brick, building concrete forms and working on the interior of the building while a Nicholasville Utilities crew was working on changing out the electrical service, which will be run underground at the site.
“Due to some weather delays, we’re a little behind where we had hoped to be,” said Bart Hayden, but he said he thinks they can still meet their target completion date of Aug. 15.
Lexington architects Brandstetter Carroll designed the 26,000-square-foot building on the site that was originally going to be a new Nicholasville City Hall. That compares to 3,500 feet of space in the cramped quarters the police are in now. The new building will have plenty of space for training and public meetings. The City Commission will move its meetings to a larger chambers in the building, and the code enforcement and drug enforcement offices will be relocating to the new building along with the rest of the police force.
Since 1983, the city Police Department and Fire Department have shared an old car dealership building close to downtown across from the current City Hall. Since 1983, the police force has grown from 15 officers to 72 officers and staff.
