Have you ever just sat and watched your kids? I mean really watched them?
As a working mom, the moments that I get to actually watch my kids and just take it in are few and far between.
Truth be told, most days are filled with “give me a minute” and “not right now.”
I hate that, but at the same time, it truly makes me breath them in when I am allotted those wonderful moments of uninterrupted kid time.
For me, this week I have been blessed with one of those days — a day where I am looking around thanking God for how truly blessed I am.
Like most of you, we start school back this week.
As I write this, I am looking around my home office thinking about how day one turned out.
When we first started our homeschool journey, we had a dedicated classroom — a beautiful sunny orange room, that was storage that we converted into a room specifically for learning.
The walls were decorated in educational posters with word families and farm animals.
An art table was centered on one wall to encourage creativity, and two desks were on another wall for paper work.
This year, however, brought about a lot of changes.
Because of the pandemic we are all currently experiencing, I am working primarily from home. Good and bad.
Have you ever noticed that when you are working from home, nobody seems to realize that you are actually working?
My family is all really good about it, but I don’t know how many times tiny hands knock on my door or little faces peek in to see what I am doing.
This change, all be it temporary, led to the eventual joining of the classroom and the play room, to which my children screamed, no it’s the playroom.
Now the gorgeous orange room is my office.
However, during the summer, we move the majority of the classroom furniture back into my office so the kids have more room to play.
And so, it begins.
Yesterday started out with not our typical homeschool day. The kids’ classroom furniture was still shoved as neatly as possible into my office, and their play room was well, a well-lived-in play room. Chaos. OK, so not really.
When you live in Rome, you do what the Romans do. So, we adjusted.
The kids had class at the kitchen table, which actually worked out pretty well, and I envisioned as any woman does, how I could redecorate and finagle a trip to Hobby Lobby out of it. Yesterday was also not typical because, since I am primarily working from home, I was able to participate in day one. We worked and worked.
We did our workbooks, we learned about adverbs and verbs and we sang songs.
My kindergartener and I practiced the letter A, and made ant art.
The day presented small tears, followed by revelations of learning and accomplishing new things.
As the day came to a close and I laid back in the recliner waiting on the oven to preheat, I closed my eyes and smiled.
My kindergartener quietly climbs up beside of me, holding his Kindle and stretches out across my lap. Despite that he no longer actually wants to cuddle, this is his way of sharing some love. This day is a day that I will breath in. This moment is one that I will cherish.
Despite that there are moments that we all want to pull our hair out, and moments where we just wonder how it all will get done, the truth is that there is no place I would rather be.
For now, I am blessed with the ability to breath in every thing about these two boys.
For now, I am able to help them learn and dance with them when they learn something new. And so, it begins.
