Jessamine and Mercer County responded to a cliffside doggie on Thursday, April 17.

According to a post by the Jessamine County Emergency Management Agency, Jessamine County Fire was made aware of an animal in distress on the Mercer County Side of the Kentucky River palisades at Brooklyn. The dog was stranded on the cliff and scaled it for an unknown amount of time.

The dog was stranded on a cliff about 100 feet above the Kentucky River. Mercer County requested the assistance of Jessamine County for rope rescue technicians.

Members from Jessamine Fire and Nicholasville Fire, Jessamine Animal Care and Control and Jessamine Emergency Management responded to save the dog and were able to build a rope system on a farm overlooking the cliff and lower a rescuer over the edge to get access to the dog.

The rescuer for the dog was chosen due to his experience with animals. He gained the dog’s trust, applied the muzzle and harness, then secured the dog and was hauled back to the top of the cliff by rescuers from the Jesamine and Mercer crews.

Right after, animal care personnel were able to assess the dog’s condition and found a chip. According to the Facebook Post, the animal care personnel are working to assure the dog is stable and will attempt to contact the registered owners.

“We hope that there can be a healthy and happy reunion with its owners soon,” read the Facebook post’s closing line.
