Veterans to be honored at celebration in Nicholasville

This year, Jessamine County is celebrating its 250-year anniversary. 

One of the events celebrating the county’s anniversary also honors veterans. The Star-Spangled Veterans Celebration will be held on Saturday, April 19, at East Jessamine High School, 815 Sulphur Well Rd. in Nicholasville. Seating for the event begins at 4 p.m. 

Brigadier General Howard P. Hunt III will be the MC for the event. According to Veterans.ky.gov, Hunt retired in September 2008 from the position of Assistant Adjutant General for Air, Kentucky Air National Guard. He also served as the Commander of the Kentucky Air National Guard. He was appointed to the state position of Deputy Adjutant General for Air as only the second Air Guard officer to hold that position in 60 years.

The event will feature an opening and closing prayer by Pastor Tim Cyphers from Jessamine Christian Church. 

The Military Freedom Fest Honor Guard will present Colors, also known as presenting the United States flag and other relevant flags. 

Attendees will be able to hear a performance of the National Anthem. Following that, a Prisoner of War/Missing in Action ceremony will be presented by Military Freedom Fest Honor Guard: Charlie Hour, Leonard Neal, Jimmy Lakes, Roy Hall, John Thurston, Doug Carter, David Morgan, Matt Vieira and Cheri Morgan. 

Several video presentations honoring active duty members, veterans, and deceased veterans will also be shown at the event. 

Dignitaries attending include Representative Matt Lockett, B/G Ben Adams, B/G Howard Hunt, Senator Donald Douglas, Commissioner of Ky. Veterans Affairs Whitney Allen, Secretary of State Michael Adams, Ron McCauley, Attorney Jon Larson, Congressman Andy Barr, Judge Executive David West, ROTC Cadets, East Jessamine and West Jessamine High School Bands, and Mayor Alex Carter.
