With ongoing flooding in Jessamine County that is specifically impacting its river communities, Central Kentucky is under a winter weather advisory.
The morning of Tuesday, Feb. 18, brought light winter weather with snow flurries. According to the National Weather Service (NWS), significant snowfall will likely start Tuesday evening.
3-6 inches of snow is forecast for Jessamine County and could start tonight at 9 p.m. and last until around 5 a.m. on Wednesday.
The impacts of this winter weather will make the Wednesday morning commute hazardous. Commuters and drivers should drive cautiously and expect slick spots on the road and lower visibility.
The impacts of this weather will also disrupt recovery efforts for the flooding from this past weekend. Although no deaths are reported in Jessamine County, Governor Beshear said 14 have died in Kentucky due to severe flooding.
The NWS also forecasts windchill temperatures throughout Central Kentucky will drop below zero or low single digits on Thursday and Friday morning.
To prepare for winter weather, have emergency food and supplies for your home and car, replenish fuel for your car and heating sources, and check your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors to see if they are working properly. Also, be sure to have multiple ways to receive weather warnings, like your phone and an emergency radio. Bring your pets indoors and ensure they have food and water to last them even after the storm.
During and after the storm, check on neighbors and family, properly ventilate emergency heating sources, keep generators at least 20 feet from your home, and take it easy when shoveling.
