Local wrestlers take it to the mat

East and West Jessamine High Schools wrestling teams placed in the December 28 Tates Creek invitational. 

In the 120-pound weight class, West Jessamine student Alex Yuryeu won third place. Yuryeu received 20 team points for his team. He won his quarterfinal match against Nathan Tucker from McCreary Central High, his consolation semifinal match against Katie Smith from Perry County Central High, and the third-place final against Nathan Tucker from McCreary Central. Yuryeu only lost one match in the invitational in the semifinal round against Benjamin Voltz from Central Hardin High. 

In the 138-pound weight class, Ethan Branham of West Jessamine High School won sixth place. Despite receiving no points for his team, Branham fought hard, winning against Lucian Jones from McCreary Central High in round 2, David Payne from Bethlehem High in round 4, and Jake Ooten from Bourbon County High in round 5. He was defeated by Hughston Andres from Corbin High School in the final match for fifth place.

In the 144-pound weight class, Miles Smith from East Jessamine High School placed third and scored 23.5 team points. Smith only lost once in the tournament in the semifinal round to Corbin High student Stephen Brent Jackson but won against Deontre Marable from Jeffersontown High School in Round 2; Lucas Roberts from Daviess County High School in the quarterfinals; Nathan Kramer from McCreary Central High in the consolation semifinals; and against Joseph Kresel from LaRue County high in the final round for third place.
