According to the United States National Weather Service (NWS) of Louisville, Kentucky, all of Kentucky is under a winter storm watch. A winter storm is likely to start at 4 a.m. Eastern Standard Time (EST) Sunday morning through 1 p.m. EST on Monday. This storm will produce significant amounts of wintry precipitation, including snow, sleet, freezing rain, and, for some, a period of rain.
According to NWS Louiseville’s Friday afternoon update, there is still uncertainty about specific precipitation types for any one location.
“Confidence in a winter storm is high. Confidence in dominant precipitation types and amounts is medium,” states NWS Louisville’s newest report.
The NWS Louisville Friday morning Facebook update on the storm reads, “Please keep in mind that as we get more data and start to iron out the finer details, like snow and ice amounts, this forecast will likely start to change.”
Heavy snow and ice are expected to cause slick and hazardous travel conditions Sunday and continue into Monday. These conditions could make travel impossible Sunday afternoon and evening in north-central Kentucky and southern Indiana. Power outages will also be possible. Significant ice accumulations across the winter storm watch area may result in tree and power line damage.
The current NWS Forecast states the highest snowfall amounts will be north of I-64 into southern Indiana.
The next NWS Louisville forecast will be issued at 4 a.m. EST Saturday.
Friday morning, the Jessamine County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) posted on Facebook, sharing the storm information from NWS Louisville.
“Please prepare and take any necessary actions for your family and others in need. We will be participating in a call on Friday afternoon and will post updates as we get them,” the Facebook post reads.
Be sure you have what you need if travel isn’t possible during or after the storm. Jessamine County’s EMA Facebook provides an example of a family disaster kit, including a three-day supply of water, a three-day supply of food, an emergency radio, clothing, bedding, toiletries, a first aid kit, tools such as flashlights, batteries, tape, etc., important documents, cash, and medicine. Also, be sure to have enough of any pets’ needs and ensure they’re inside.
According to NWS Louisville, the early-week winter storm will be followed by several frigid days. The forecast for Tuesday through Friday shows daytime temperatures remaining below freezing and nighttime readings occasionally falling into the single digits. “These very cold temperatures will have a significant impact on any locations that are without power after the Sunday-Monday storm.”
