Shirley Harmon, cherished mother and devoted “Mee-maw,” passed away peacefully on October 9th, 2024, surrounded by her loving family. Born in Lexington, KY, in September of 1946 to EB and Anna Cochran, growing up on their family farm in Lexington, KY, Shirley grew up with a love for horses, sports, Elvis and spending time at the lake, laying the foundation for her lifelong commitment to family, community, and her beloved UK Wildcats.

Shirley met the love of her life, John Harmon, while attending Lafayette High School in Lexington, KY. They shared 61 years of marriage filled with love, laughter, and joy. Together, they raised three wonderful children: John Harmon (Lisa Harmon) of Lancaster, KY, Kimberlee Harmon Barnhardt (Perry Barnhardt) of Nicholasville, KY, and Christian Harmon (Brandy Harmon) of Lexington, KY. Shirley was a dedicated and supportive mother, known for her boundless energy, attending every sporting event, school function, and celebration, always cheering her family on with pride.

Her grandchildren Samantha Harmon Hager (Willie Hager), Mathias Harmon Zachary Barnhardt and Ally Barnhardt, and great-grandchildren, Hunter Hager and Harlin Hager, brought her immense joy. Shirley never missed a single game or event—from cheerleading competitions to baseball to football games, she was there, her presence a constant source of encouragement and love.

A true sports enthusiast, Shirley had a deep love for football, especially her UK Wildcats. Whether attending games in person or cheering from her living room, she was a loyal fan, full of excitement and passion. One of our favorite memories was telling Christian (and a few of his friends) to knock butt at the football game!!

Those who knew Shirley best will remember her infectious laughter and her love of conversation. Whether it was a quick chat or a long chat, she always had a story to share, often sprinkled with her fiery spirit and humor. Her storytelling was legendary, and family gatherings were never complete without her tales of old times or recent adventures.

Shirley is preceded in death by her husband, John J. Harmon, and their son, John N. Harmon. She leaves behind a legacy of love, strength, and a family that adored her. Her presence will be deeply missed, but the countless memories she created will live on in the hearts of those who loved her.

In keeping with her wishes, a private Celebration of Life will be held in her honor. The family kindly requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in Shirley’s memory to Bridgepointe at Ashgrove. Which is where she lived the last few years of her life. They were such a huge support to us and loved her like she was family.

Shirley’s wishes for cremation will be honored.

Friends & family may share memories or leave condolences on her tribute wall at: www.ramsey-young.com and/or ckccrematory.com. Ramsey-Young Funeral Home and Central Kentucky Cremation are entrusted with arrangements.
