The Asbury volleyball, soccer and cross country teams were in action over this past week.

Volleyball

The Asbury volleyball team (11-4, 6-0 CCS) took their sixth straight sweep and seventh consecutive win on Tuesday night at Maryville College (11-7, 4-2 CCS), in Maryville, Tn., to move to 6-0 in the Collegiate Conference of the South (CCS) and 11-4 on the year. Asbury has now won 19 of their last 21 sets and have not lost a set since September 29th. The Eagles continued their recent success from the start of the match, taking all three sets with scores of 25-19, 25-20, and 25-22 respectively. AU used eight aces in the match and held Maryville to one ace.

Asbury volleyball (12-4, 8-0 CCS) remained undefeated in their CCS opening season on Saturday afternoon with wins over Huntingdon (8-16, 4-4 CCS) and Piedmont (3-12, 3-5 CCS) on their home court in Wilmore, Ky., taking the win streak to nine including the sixth sweep of the run. AU took the opening win of the day over Huntingdon with a score of 3-1 and then swept Piedmont with a decisive 3-0 win. The Eagles were in form from the start, besting the Hawks 25-18 in the first set and continuing their winning streak with a 25-21 victory in the second set. Although Asbury faced a setback in the third set, losing narrowly at 31-33, they clinched the victory by capturing the fourth set at 26-24. Their performance against Piedmont was consistently strong, securing set scores of 25-23, 25-15, and 25-18. The two-time CCS Rookie of the Week Isabelle VandeSchraaf had one of her most impressive games of the season against Huntingdon, going for 21 kills and 23 digs for her ninth double-double of the season. She led AU with 14 kills in game two as well. Junior media communication major Riley McChord led AU on the day in digs and aces with 37 digs and four aces across the two matches. Freshman Abigail Bruner had three blocks against Piedmont while her freshman teammate Amelia Mays had two aces. Lucy Kate Gray had 28 assists against Huntingdon and 42 on the day. Emma Grace Gray had 13 kills in the first match while Sophie Glushchak had eight. 

Men’s soccer

Senior business admin major Ryan Kim scored his third goal of the season on Wednesday night as Asbury men’s soccer (6-3-2, 2-1-0 CCS) took their second straight Collegiate Conference of the South (CCS) win with a 1-0 victory over Maryville College in Wilmore, Ky.Asbury corporate sponsor APM Paving presented the event, the official asphalt and concrete contracting sponsor of Asbury Athletics. The Eagles started off strong when Ryan Kim, assisted by Austin Dunlap (team-leading three), scored the sole goal of the match at 15:17 in the first period. This early lead set the tone for the remainder of the contest, despite intense pressure from the Scots.

AU sophomore Salat Kipterit scored his team-high sixth goal of the season on Saturday afternoon as Asbury men’s soccer (7-3-2, 3-1-0 CCS) took their third straight Collegiate Conference of the South (CCS) win with a 5-0 victory over LaGrange College in LaGrange, Ga. The Eagles started off strong when Kipterit scored the opening goal of the match at 5:41 in the first half. This early lead set the tone for the remainder of the game as Asbury went on to score four more goals by Nick Eller (36:50), Jason Flaming (49:05), Jon Gordon (63:35), and Ryan Kim (76:06). Eller, Flaming, and Kim’s goals were their fourth each on the season, all being tied for second on the team after Kim’s two goals in the last two matches. Senior Dalton Fleshood assisted Flaming’s goal for his third on the year while Flaming had an assist on Gordon’s goal for his team-leading fourth this season. Junior Jon Gordon’s goal in the 63rd minute was the first of his Asbury career. AU finished the match with 13 total shots and 10 on goal, scoring five of their 10 put on goal.

Women’s soccer

In a CCS soccer showdown on Thursday afternoon, the Asbury women’s soccer team (5-4-3), showcased a comeback to claim a 3-1 victory over the LaGrange Panthers (4-6-3) in a critical conference event held at Panther Field. Despite trailing 1-0 at halftime, the Eagles turned the game around to secure a win that bolsters their conference record to 2-1-0 and overall to 5-4-3 this season. The Panthers took the early lead, putting the Eagles behind at the break. However, the determination of Asbury University’s players shone in the second half. Key performances from Hannah Muncie, Maggie Perry, and Madie Boehnlein, who scored the game-winning goal at 69:45, propelled the Eagles to a decisive comeback. Each scored one goal and recorded vital points for the team. Violette Moore was in goal for the Eagles today, managing two crucial saves, and highlighted a strong defensive effort despite the early goal against.

In a tightly contested conference face-off, the Asbury University women’s soccer team (5-4-4) ended in a 2-2 draw against Huntingdon College (3-6-2) on Saturday afternoon at the Samford Soccer Complex. Freshman media communications major Eva De Sousa netted her first collegiate goal, being the equalizer in the match.The game was neck-and-neck from the get-go, with both teams locked at 2-2 by halftime. Asbury’s goals were scored by Anna Sparks and Eva De Sousa, showcasing the team’s dynamic offensive capabilities.Sparks’s goal was particularly notable, adding to her season tally of four, while De Sousa’s finish highlighted her growing impact on the field. Assisting in Sparks’ goal was Hannah Muncie, whose playmaking skills were on full display.

Cross country

Blessed with a perfect day to race and empowered by a desire to honor the memory of one of Asbury’s finest athletes ever, the Eagle Cross Country teams enjoyed great performances as they hosted the Chick-fil-A Justin Spoon Fiercely Faithful meet. The ladies team ran away with the team title and fifth-year super senior Wes Preston captured the individual championship in the men’s race. Mens XC 2024. The 5 Kilometer (3.1 miles) women’s competition featured outstanding efforts by the Eagle team co-captains Ava Miller and Sarah Yost finishing second and third out of the 46 runners, separated by less than a second at the finish. Ava completed the course in a time of 21:11.6 just a step ahead of Sarah’s 21:12.4. Senior Lily Anne Reinhart came in ninth for the team, followed by freshman Emma Groff (10th) and senior Ella Morton (13th) in scoring positions. Senior Sarah Grimes finished 15th for the Eagles, setting a new personal best for the third straight meet. Nine different schools had participants in the ladies’ race. Asbury topped the team standings with 30 points, followed by Midway University in the runner-up position with 47 points (low score wins in cross country competitions).
