Tennis season opened up this week in Georgia, while track and field competed in the NCCAA Indoor National Championships. Mens and womens hoops welcomed Warren Wilson for a Saturday afternoon doubleheader.

 

Womens basketball

The Asbury womens basketball team (16-7) extended its winning streak to nine games on Saturday, taking down Warren Wilson College (1-23) 102-30. The Eagles scored the most points in a game on the season in Saturday afternoon’s win. AU’s current win streak of nine ties the 2015-2016 women’s team for most consecutive wins in a season in the last eight years. Trinity Shearer led all scorers with 19 points (8-10 FG), seven rebounds and six steals. Camryn Poole poured in 12 points, four rebounds and four steals. Spencer Harvey, Sami Bottom (3-3 3PT), and Ma’Kiya West all added 11 points. Camryn Preston had eight points, recorded three blocks and grabbed four boards. Morgan Flannery dished out a team-high seven assists.

 

Mens basketball

Asbury graduate guard Dakota Walden and senior forward Clayton Winter combined for 43 points on Saturday night in the Luce Center to lead Asbury men’s basketball (15-8) over Warren Wilson College (3-19), for their sixth straight win. AU grabbed their second-most rebounds as a team on the year with 43 boards. The Eagles scored 49 points in the first half and 48 in the second for their second-highest-scoring game of the season. Walden scored 22 points (6-12 FG) and went perfect from the line (8-8), including two threes and two rebounds. Clayton Winter grabbed his 11 double-double and sixth straight, with a season-high 21 points and ten rebounds. Caleb Wallis scored 13 points with eight rebounds, three assists, and four steals in his first game back from injury. Cayden Lancaster went 6-8 from the field for 13 points with two boards, a block, and a steal. Luke Imfeld scored nine points with four rebounds and two assists. Aden Slone had seven points with five steals and five assists.

 

Mens and womens track and field

Asbury track and field senior Wes Preston led the way on Saturday in the NCCAA Indoor National Championships in Cedarville, Oh., as he broke the men’s 3000 meter school record that was previously held by former Asbury Eagle, Justin Spoon. Preston was a teammate of Spoon’s during Preston’s initial year at AU and credits where he is today by the way Spoon led he and his teammates.The Asbury mens team finished 13th of out 18 teams and the AU women finished 11th out of 15 teams in the NCCAA Nationals. Both Brendan Funke and John Rahbany had huge personal best performances in their events which resulted in points for Asbury. Funke threw almost a 2-foot PR in the Shot Put (13.74m / 45′ 1″) to place 7th in the event. John Rahbany had a foot and a half personal best jump of 6.63m (21′ 9″), placing 6th in the long jump. The Asbury womens team was impressive with their performances as well, racking up team points and school records as well. Freshman Bailey Gassmann led the way with a 5th place finish in both the mile and 3000-meter run. She also anchored the 4x400m relay team that included Ava Miller, Sarah Yost, and Brooke O’Carroll to an 8th-place finish.Gassmann’s time of 10:49.77 in the 3000 meter was a personal best and new Asbury school record.Brooke O’Carroll also added points in the Mile, finishing 8th. The womens 4x400m relays time also established a new school record. All together, over the weekend, the Eagles broke 11 school records.

 

Mens and womens tennis

The Asbury mens and womens tennis teams traveled to Rome, Ga. for their season opener against Berry College on Saturday evening. Despite falling in doubles, the women went on to sweep in singles against the Vikings, giving them their first win of the season, 6-3. The men were unable to find momentum and slipped to Berry 8-1. After tough losses from doubles, the women rallied back and swept Berry on the singles side. Ariadna Zegarra, Martina Paillet, Megan Moore, Fernanda Heredia, Kourtney Kawata, and Malory Watkins all picked up wins against the Vikings. The lone victory from the men’s side came from freshmen Ben Moore and Andres Caceres in the #2 doubles match (8-3). Ignacio Murillo battled in his singles match, taking his opponent to three sets but ultimately falling 6-2, 6-4, 11-13.
