The Jessamine County Board of Education had its first meeting of the year, voted on a final plan for the county’s new middle school, and voted for this term’s chair and vice chair of the Board.
At the beginning of December, the board of education heard plans for the new middle school to be located at 3093 Ashgrove Road. The board voted to accept the plans but still asked the architects to draft a plan that included a softball and a baseball field since the original plan only included a football field, a track, and the space for a soccer field.
In the Monday, Jan. 9 meeting, Superintendent Matt Moore presented the board with the new $86 Million plan for the middle school. It includes all four requested fields and a concession stand that all sports can share. The board also discussed bringing the baseball field netting up higher for safety because of the tight quarters of the property.
The property includes space for an elementary school in the future.
“We’re a fast-growing district,” Superintendent Moore said.
A new elementary school isn’t coming any time soon, but Moore said the board bought the land because if, in 10 years, the district needs a new elementary school, it will have the land.
This term’s chair and vice chair
The board voted for the chair and the vice chair to start the year.
Steven Scrivner, the district 5 school board representative since the 2018 election, was re-elected by fellow members as board chair.
Board members re-elected Bobby Welch as vice chair. Welch was initially elected in 2016.

- The Board accepted a proposal by Moore to purchase 10 new school buses. Most of the district’s bus fleet is from 2006, and some are not repairable. Moore said these buses likely won’t arrive until this Fall.
The next board meeting is scheduled for Monday, Jan. 23, at 6 p.m. at 871 Wilmore Road.
