Starting Oct. 24, the 859 area code will begin requiring 10-digit dialing.
On that date, 10 digits must be used for phone numbers, including local numbers, to complete phone calls. This change will support the FCC in adopting a three-digit National Suicide Hotline – 988, launching in 2022. As of writing, the suicide hotline number remains 1-800-273-8255 (1-800-273-TALK.)
Ten-digit dialing requires entering both the three-digit area code and the seven-digit telephone number, even if callers have the same area code. This means that seven digits can no longer be used to make local calls. This transition will not change current telephone numbers.
There are 82 area codes in 35 states and one U.S. territory using 988 as their current area code and allow for seven-digit dialing. This transition to assign 988 to the National Suicide Hotline will provide a way for callers to quickly reach the hotline.
Businesses that use a PBX or VoIP phone system may need to update or reprogram their system for 10-digit dialing. The FCC recommends making any necessary changes and testing to and for these systems during the month of October.
