Celebration to end with march to courthouse

The Committee of the Care Council, devoted to closing the achievement gap in Jessamine County, recently spoke at a city commission meeting urging the Nicholasville City Commission to recognize Martin Luther King Day in Jessamine County.
“It has come to our attention that Jessamine County, as far as we know, has never officially observed Martin Luther King Day with any kind of official commemoration,” Caroyln Dupont said. “Even though it has been a federal holiday since the 1980s.”
The committee, Dupont said, is planning a Martin Luther King program and hopes to have it this year on Monday Jan. 20 at Nicholasville Elementary. The committee would also like to organize a march to the county courthouse afterwards.
“We have most of the planning in place and we reached out to Chief Justice and he has graciously agreed to offer security and traffic support and said we should bring it before the court and commission for support,” Dupont said
Dupont stated she was not sure what particularly they needed from the city commission other than support and attendance.
“As a historian, I think it is important from our past which stories we chose to remember, this one is very important for us to remember, to think about how far we have come and to also think about how far we have left to go,” Dupont said. “We think that there is no need for people who choose to commemorate this day to go to Lexington as many of them do, and we should have something here in Jessamine County.”
Dupont said even Mercer County has an extensive ceremony in remembrance of Martin Luther King Day.
“You will find that we fully support it,” Nicholasville Mayor Peter Sutherland said. “You have our full approval.”
Dupont thanked the Mayor and said the council looked forward to seeing the commission at the event early next year.
