Eleanor Jane Van Arsdell Warren

Eleanor Jane Van Arsdell, 93, of Wilmore, Kentucky, passed away on Oct. 29, 2018 at Wesley Village. Eleanor was born on the University of Kentucky campus at her childhood home on Graham Ave. in Lexington Aug. 13, 1925 to the late Hord and Carrie Van Arsdell. She was affectionately nicknamed “Sugar” by her immediate family, and the youngest of 11 children.
She is the widow of Donald Warren, a Lexington native (deceased 1988). Donald was a career metallurgical engineer for the DuPont Co. in Wilmington, Delaware, where they lived and raised their family. Eleanor is the beloved mother of Bruce (Richel) Warren of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Dale (Janet) Warren of Nicholasville, Kentucky, and Nancy (Tim) Shappell of Fargo, North Dakota. Grandchildren are Gabe Shappell; Christine, Michelle, and Michael Warren; LaShele Warren, and six great grandchildren.
She graduated from Henry Clay High School and the University of Kentucky (Math, 1947). She met Donald, her husband, after he returned from WWII as a co-pilot of a B-24. They met on the steps of Broadway Christian Church and married in 1946. After Donald earned his Ph.D. from Lehigh University, they moved to Wilmington, Delaware, where he worked for DuPont until retirement. Married 42 years, they shared a life-long commitment to faith and service in Hanover Street Presbyterian Church. Eleanor served in many leadership roles during her 60-year membership.
Family ties brought her back to Kentucky in 2011. She lived at Wesley Village where she received excellent care. A woman of many talents, Eleanor was an excellent cook and baker, seamstress, gardener and caretaker for her sisters. She was also a substitute math teacher beloved by students. She planned an annual family reunion in different states after Donald died. She loved life, nature, travel and filming everything. She will be remembered for her love, beauty, amazing food, dedication to family and service. She will be dearly missed.
A celebration of her life will occur in the Historic Sanctuary of South Elkhorn Christian Church, 4343 Harrodsburg Rd. Saturday Nov. 10. Visitation will be 10 to 11:30 a.m. Service is 11:30 a.m. Memorial donations may be made to “The Legacy Fund,” South Elkhorn Christian Church, 4343 Harrodsburg Rd., Lexington, KY 40513.
