US-27 South in Nicholasville was shut down for a little over five hours on Sunday due to a fatal accident involving a silver passenger car and a semi-truck at the intersection of Elizabeth Street and US-27.
The man driving the passenger car heading south died at the scene after hitting the semi-truck that was turning left into a nearby gas station, said Nicholasville Police. The preliminary investigation showed the semi-truck had a green arrow to turn and the passenger car was at a red light.
“We believe at this time, he ran a red light but we’re still looking into it,” Sargent Scott Harvey with the Nicholasville Police said.
The man has not yet been identified, and officials said the man driving the semi truck was uninjured.
Hazmat crews were called to help clean up fuel and other fluids that were spilled onto the road.
