One dead after early morning shooting

A Nicholasville man will be facing a murder charge after allegedly shooting and killing another person on Beauford Place.

Michael Walker, 45, of Rebel Road, Nicholasville, was arrested early Wednesday morning on South Main Street for first-degree assault for allegedly shooting 33-year-old Mario Walls of Nicholasville. According to the arrest citation, Walker admitted to shooting the victim in the parking lot at 800 Beauford Place.

After police learned the victim has died, Grimes said officers contacted court officials to upgrade the charge to murder.

According to court documents, Nicholasville Police officers were called to 800 Beauford Place at 10:47 p.m. Tuesday for a person with a gunshot wound to the abdomen. The victim was transported to the hospital and passed away early Wednesday morning at the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington.

According to the Fayette County Coroner’s Office, Walls died from a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at 2:11 a.m. Oct. 14 at the hospital

Nicholasville Police Sgt. Kevin Grimes said officers and detectives are still actively investigating the incident to determine what happened.

“It appears they didn’t know each other,” Grimes said Wednesday morning of Walker and the victim. “We don’t know yet. We have detectives out talking to neighbors and witnesses. We don’t know what the motive was.”

Officers obtained a basic description of a suspect from those near the scene and located Walker near the Five Star Market on North Main Street, near the scene of the shooting. Walker was standing in the parking lot, and had a handgun in the waist of his pants. Walker was arrested and the weapon was secured, police said.

After police learned the victim has died, Grimes said officers contacted court officials to upgrade the charge to murder.

Walker is being held in the Jessamine County Detention Center without a bond.
