Mens and womens basketball had successful weeks, while mens soccer qualified for the NCCAA National Tournament in Kissimmee, Fl.

Mens basketball 

Senior guard Caleb Wallis scored 13 of his 22 points in the final three minutes to complete the Asbury (3-0) comeback win over Berea College (1-1) on Tuesday, Nov. 14, in the Luce Center, 80-70. Wallis went 6-12 from the field with four threes, three rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Ben McNew also went 6-12, scoring 16 points with four boards and two assists. Clayton Winter added 15 points for AU, going 7-10 from the field with nine rebounds for the second straight game. Dakota Walden led Asbury on the glass with 11 rebounds, adding nine points and two assists. Transfer guard Aden Slone led the AU offense with seven assists, also going 4-8 for 11 points and three rebounds.

Graduate guard Dakota Walden and junior forward Clayton Winter powered Asbury men’s hoops to their third straight home win, beating Alice Lloyd (4-1), 84-81 on Saturday, Nov. 18, in the Luce Center. Winter had 19 points on 7-12 shooting with eight rebounds, four assists, and two steals. Walden scored 18 points with three three-pointers, six boards, and three assists.  

Caleb Wallis (14) and Ben McNew (13) each scored double-digit points. Wallis had four rebounds with two assists, McNew dished three assists with three boards.

Womens basketball

On Nov. 17, Asbury (2-2) traveled to Wilmington Oh., to take on Wilmington College (1-2) in game one of the Fred Raizk Memorial Classic. Camryn Preston’s 23 points helped propel the Eagles to a victory in the tight contest, 70-60. Camryn Preston had a great night for the Eagles, pouring in 23 points on 11-14 FG, adding four steals, three rebounds, and two assists in 24 minutes of action. Haleigh Releford and Spencer Harvey each had double-digit scoring games of their own, Releford scoring 14 and Harvey adding 11. Celia Pelfrey added eight points off the bench, along with three steals to help lead the Eagles in the defensive department. 

Asbury (2-2) fell on day two of the classic to Mount Saint Joseph (5-0), 64-57. Spencer Harvey and Camryn Preston each recorded a double-double on the day with 11 points and 10 rebounds from Harvey and 10 points with 10 rebounds from Preston. The Eagles were led in scoring by senior Spencer Harvey with 11 points. Camryn Preston and Haleigh Releford added 10 points each for AU. Carley Hinshaw gave good minutes for Asbury off the bench, scoring six points on a perfect 3-3 from the field. She also added four rebounds and two assists in the contest. Despite the loss, AU was able to hold the Lions to just 36% FG and 26% behind the arc. The Eagles’ defense has been a key early in the season.

Mens soccer

After almost three weeks of no competition, Asbury (11-3-4) hosted Oakland City for round one of the NCCAA Mideast Regional Tournament on Thursday, Nov. 16. After a scoreless first, AU went on to claim two of their own to take the victory over Oakland City in a 2-0 match.

Last Thursday’s match marks AU’s eighth shutout this season, with all eight coming from Freshman keeper Peyton French. French now sits at No.1 in the NCCAA for goals allowed, with only eight in his 13 played. Jason Flaming was AU’s leader tonight, putting up three shots, all on goal. After 65 scoreless minutes of play, Flaming would find the back of the net with help from Luke Thomas. Both sides of the Eagles were hot tonight with AU combining for 18 shots with six going on goal. Notable contributors were Dalton Fleshood, Jason Flaming, Austin Dunlap, and Luke Thomas all grabbing three shots of their own. 

Asbury hosted Campbellsville University (13-5-2) on Saturday, Nov. 18, in the NCCAA Mideast Regional Championship. Both sides put up impressive efforts, but AU would ultimately fall to the Tigers in a 2-0 match, resulting in AU’s third loss of the year. Ryan Kim led AU with four shots and two on-goal. Austin Dunlap would follow behind Kim with three shots of his own. Dalton Fleshood, Luke Thomas, and Nick Eller aided in AU’s offensive efforts, each grabbing a shot apiece. 

The men have qualified for the NCCAA National Tournament in Kissimmee, Fl., next week. The team will kick off the national tournament against Westmont College on Monday, Nov. 27. 

Swimming

Both the mens and womens swimming teams traveled to Wabash College to compete in the Gail Pebworth Inviational last weekend. The team competed amongst 12 teams in the mens divisions and 13 in the womens division. Amber Schulte took 3rd place in the 1650 freestyle while, mens swimmer Ian Wang grabbed the title of 200 breast champion. The women finished eighth overall in the invite, while the men took ninth place in the competition.
