It was fall break this past week for students on campus, but Asbury Athletics did not stop. Volleyball won their only match of the week 3-0 and men’s soccer still has yet to lose a game since September, continuing their hot play with a 2-0-1 record on the week.

Women’s soccer

Asbury women’s soccer (1-7-4) traveled to Danville, on Wednesday, Oct. 11, to take on Centre College (9-1-4). Centre took the victory 2-0, in a hard-fought Division III match. The AU defense held the Colonels for long periods of play throughout the night, but the Eagle offense was not able to get through during the match. The Eagles were able to get off two shots on the Colonels on the night with one resulting in a shot on goal (SOG). Centre attempted 19 shots, with eight landing as SOG. Asbury sophomore Violette Moore collected six saves, while the Colonels had one. Maggie Higdon and Mary Hostetter got the shot attempts for the Eagles tonight, with Higdon landing a SOG.

The Eagles traveled to Demorest, Ga., on Saturday, October 14th morning to take on Piedmont University (7-5-4), the No. 3 ranked team in the Collegiate Conference of the South (CCS). Asbury and the CCS announced last week that the Eagles will become an official member of the conference on July 1, 2024. In the Saturday morning road matchup Asbury’s aggressive offense was kept scoreless as Piedmont took the win, 2-0, in the second-ever matchup between the two schools. AU was able to out-shoot the Lions, putting together 17 shots with six of those shots on goal compared to Piedmont’s seven shots with three on goal. Violette Moore tallied another solid game in goal for Asbury with a save and just two goals. Freshman Maggie Higdon led the Eagles offensively in shot attempts with five.

Men’s soccer

The Asbury men’s soccer team (7-2-4) returned home after two weeks of away competitions to take on Berea College on Tuesday, Oct. 10,  in Wilmore. Freshman Jason Flaming scored two goals to lead Asbury to their sixth win of the season in a 5-3 match. AU’s goals were split by three in the first and two in the second. Goal scorers for AU included Dalton Fleshood, Jason Flaming (2), Luke Thomas, and Austin Dunlap. Dunlap scored the Eagles final goal of the match to give him six on the year to lead Asbury.

The Eagles hosted NCCAA opponent Boyce College on Friday, Oct. 13, for a matchup in Wilmore.. The Eagles put up five goals in the first half to secure their fourth straight win and their seventh of the season, 6-0 over Boyce.

AU have now collected six shutouts on the year, with freshman keeper Peyton French tallying his sixth clean sheet. Asbury has now outscored their opponents 29-12 on the season, averaging only one goal allowed per game.

The Eagles continued their stretch of home competition on Monday, Oct. 16,  taking on Maryville College (5-5-5). An intense 90-minute battle ensued with impressive efforts from both sides. The match resulted in a scoreless tie to give AU their fourth draw of the season.

Despite the draw, the Eagles put up 11 shots against Maryville with four on goal. AU starters combined for eight of their 11 shots on the night. Luke Thomas led AU tonight with two shots, both going on goal.

Volleyball

Asbury volleyball (9-10) won on Monday, Oct. 9, sweeping Welch College in the Luce Center with a .309 hitting percentage. The .309 is Asbury’s most efficient of the season, as they have now won two straight, and four of their last six to be one win short of .500. In head coach Tiffany Horton’s second year, the Eagles are finding their stride heading into the back half of the 2023 season.

Sophomore Sidney Haysley led the Eagles with 12 kills, trailed by Emma Grace Gray with her 12th double-digit kill match of the year. Riley McChord supported AU defensively with 11 digs, alongside Arian Bluestein and Isabella Brewer with seven apiece.

Lexington Clinic Athletes of the Week

Sophomore Sidney Haysley (volleyball) and junior Dalton Fleshood (men’s soccer) have been named the Asbury University Athletes of the Week, presented by the Lexington Clinic Orthopedics-Sports Medicine Center.

Sidney Haysley is a sophomore from Louisville who is pursuing a degree in theater production.

Haysley recorded a team-high 12 kills in just three last week’s match against Welch College.

With her help, the team secured a win in their only match of the week, 3-0.

Dalton Fleshood is a junior from Orlando, Fl. pursuing a business administration degree.

Fleshood had an awe-inspiring week, scoring two goals and adding two assists for the Eagles.

Fleshood’s six points on the week helped lead AU to a perfect 2-0 record.
