There will be door-to-door trick-or-treating in Nicholasville on Halloween, but there won’t be public events this year.

Monday evening, the Nicholasville City Commission set trick-or-treating hours for 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 31. Families will use their own judgment and discretion about how to participate this year.

Nicholasville Mayor Pete Sutherland said the annual Spooky Times on Main event won’t happen because of COVID-19 concerns.

“I don’t think we can even talk about Spooky Times,” Sutherland said.

Trick-or-treating will be an old-fashioned affair, he said, where families choose where they go. Residents will turn their porch light on if they are participating, or leave it off if they aren’t, he said.

“I think a lot of kids go to certain neighborhoods anyway,” Commissioner Alex Carter said.

“What we need to do is educate folks as best we can … and let them make an informed decision,” Commissioner Doug Blackford said.

Nicholasville City Clerk Kathy Walker said she spoke with clerks in several other communities and was told they were pursuing a similar plan with no public events and set hours on Halloween.
