Asbury Athletics and the Student Athlete Advisory Committee brought back Eagle Awards in fashion on Wednesday night, hosting a fun night with all student-athletes, families, and coaches. Meanwhile the Asbury softball team finished up their season with a sweep over Kentucky State, 5-3 and 11-1 on Thursday.

Softball

Asbury softball (13-20) traveled to Frankfort to take on Kentucky State last Thursday afternoon in a doubleheader to close out their season. After being swept last Tuesday to the Thorobreds at home, AU rallied back to avenge last week’s losses winning 5-3 and 11-1.Kaitlyn Wilson led the Eagles in game one at the plate, going 3-4, two runs scored, and one RBI. Josie Deatherage finished her dominating season on the mound collecting her eighth win, with seven strikeouts, just six hits, and three runs. Deatherage’s complete game marks her 16th of the season.

In game two it was all Eagles. Taylor Enlow, Kaitlyn Wilson, Katelyn Bolin, and Kaylee Korros all collected multi-hit games. Sidney Hansen took the mound for the Eagles collecting her second win of the season. Hansen in five innings allowed no earned runs on just two hits, striking out four. This completes the 2024 season for the Asbury softball team, finishing at 13-20 on the year.

When asked about the games head coach Ally Moore had this to say, “The team played two of their best games of the season. We made great plays on the field and hit top to bottom in the lineup. It was a great way to end the year and send off our senior, Taylor Enlow. The future of this program is bright!”

Eagle Awards

On Wednesday, April 24, Asbury Athletics brought back the Eagle Awards in-person. The event was held in the Asbury Walt and Rowena Shaw Collaborative Learning Center, and was an end of the year celebration for all athletes and coaches, while also recognizing athletes who performed at the highest level. Asbury Athletics fields 16 teams of competition and over 200 student-athletes. The night has not been in-person since 2019 when the ceremony was hosted at the Asbury Miller Center for Communications & Arts. For the past four years the Eagle Awards have been virtually released on social media, recognizing AU student-athletes that have excelled in competition and also in the classroom. The ceremony was produced by the Asbury Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and was hosted by Asbury Baseball Chaplain Dr. Dan Lewis and Assistant Professor of Journalism / AU Basketball Commentator Rich Manieri. Some of the awards that were announced consisted of Male & Female Athlete of the Year, Men & Women Team’s of the Year, Male & Female Comeback Player of the Year, Male & Female Newcomer of the Year, and more
