Mens and womens basketball continued their hot streaks this week with each taking their two wins in such games. The women currently ride an eight-game winning streak, while the men hold a streak of five. AU track and field traveled to Cedarville to compete in the Cedarville Invite before next week’s NCCAA Indoor National Championships.
Womens basketball
Head coach Chad Mayes picked up his 100th career win as head of the Eagles program on Tuesday, Jan. 30, as Asbury (15-7) defeated NCCAA foe Alice Lloyd (10-11), 71-54. AU used a big third quarter to take down the Eagles, outscoring ALC by 27 points in the second half. Haleigh Releford led all scorers with 23 points (10-15 FG), eight rebounds and five assists. Trinity Shearer scored 19 points (9-15 FG) and grabbed five steals and three rebounds. Spencer Harvey added 17 points (7-10 FT), five rebounds, four steals, and three assists. Morgan Flannery had six points, three assists, two rebounds, and one steal.
The Eagles won against Warren Wilson College (0-21) on Saturday, Feb. 3, 81-51. Shearer led all scorers with 21 points and added a career-high 10 steals in the win to help the team extend its winning streak to eight games. Shearer led all scorers with 21 points (10-17 FG), a career-high 10 steals, and five assists. Releford scored 17 points (7-12 FG) and recorded two steals and two rebounds. Camryn Preston added 17 points (7-11 FG), seven rebounds, three blocks and two steals. Ma’Kiya West grabbed seven rebounds off the bench.
Mens basketball
Luke Imfeld scored a career-high 16 points on Tuesday, Jan. 30, in Louisville as the Eagles(13-8) took their fourth straight win, coming from behind to beat Boyce College (5-13) on the road, 73-69. AU outrebounded their opponent for the fourth consecutive time during the win-streak (44-37), led by senior Clayton Winter with 20 rebounds and 15 points (ninth double-double of the season). Dakota Walden continued his impressive run, going 5-12 for 15 points with five boards and a steal. Ben McNew went 5-9 with three 3’s for 13 points, dishing two assists and grabbing a steal. Aden Slone scored 12 points on 4-7 shooting with five assists and a steal after being named Lexington Clinic Athlete of the Week.
Dakota Walden helped pull AU past Warren Wilson on Saturday afternoon, 86-69. Walden led AU with 27 points and grabbed seven boards. Winter recorded his 10th double-double of the season, with 11 points and 17 boards of his own, aiding in the Eagle’s efforts against the Owls. Saturday’s win extends AU’s winning streak to five in a row, averaging 83.2 points in their last five contests. Slone recorded his sixth game of double-digit scoring, grabbing 14 points and two steals. Kirk Lemons added eight points, grabbing two 3’s in just 10 minutes of play.
Mens and womens track & field
Sophomore Daniel Kersey helped lead AU’s third track and field meet of the season at the Cedarville College Invite. Kersey is the fourth Eagle this year to qualify for NCCAA Nationals in his 5000m run with a qualifying mark of 16:24.49s. Bailey Gassmann, Ava Miller, Brooke O’Carroll and Elise Terpstra aided AU’s results, finishing first in the 4000 distance medley relay with a time of 13:49.32. The Eagles went on to grab nine top-eight finishes in a variety of different events.
In a record of its own, Asbury set 12 school records at the Cedarville Invite. John Rabany set two school records in the 60m dash (7.31) and the long jump (5.96m – 19’6.75″). Freshmen Josiah Wehling and August Price both set AU records, with Wehling in the 200m dash (24.37s) and Price in the weight throw (8.73m – 28’7″). AU went on to set school records in the 5000m, weight throw, 4×200 relay, DMR, 200m dash, 400m dash and the 3000m
