Looking forward to a 400-mile shopping spree

I’ve never been very big on going to the mall for my retail therapy, to me it’s too expensive. I prefer delving into treasures with a past that can only be found at places like yard sales.
When I was a child that was one thing our family enjoyed doing together. We would drive through various neighborhoods in Winchester looking for those signature neon yard sale signs. Many of my favorite toys came from these ventures.
This is why I am so excited to hear that the first weekend of June, shoppers and vendors from across Kentucky will have the opportunity to find all types of hidden treasures in 400 miles’ worth of yard sales — one could literally shop until they drop.
The sale will be set up alongside historic U.S. 68, from the Ohio and Kentucky border near Old Washington to Sharpe, just south of Paducah near the Illinois and Kentucky border.
This year marks the 14th anniversary of the 400 Mile Sale across Kentucky, which will take place on Thursday, June 1 through Sunday, June 4.
The Servant Heart Farm along U.S. 68 near Wilmore will again be the official Jessamine County sale site.
Executive Director of the Wilmore Community Development Board Judy Woolums said the farm is a nice safe place for Wilmore to host the event.
This is Woolums’ first year over the Wilmore sale site due to the retirement of Mary Kozak, former special projects coordinator for Jessamine County.
Over 50 vendors participated last year selling antiques, collectibles, home goods and crafts.
I tend to lean toward the tables filled with shimmering jewelry, but there will be plenty of trinkets and whatnots for everyone to appreciate.
Not only do I enjoy shopping at places like this, but I also used to make jewelry that I sold to plenty of passersby with an eye for beads.
Woolums said there are still plenty of spots left for those who would like to sell their items during the event.
For those who would like to be a vendor, applications and information can be found at www.destinationjessamine.com, www.jessamineco.com, www.wilmore.org or 859-858-4411. Information is also available on the Destination Jessamine Facebook page. Information on the entire route can be found at 400mile.com.
This 400 Mile Sale is not only a great way to get in some shopping therapy, it is also an opportunity to meet and learn about various people in the community as well as surrounding areas. It’s neat the things you can learn about a person just by looking at the things they are selling.
One would be surprised at the unique and interesting trinkets our neighbors sell, and with 400 miles’ worth of items, the possibilities are endless.
