The Mosaic Madness Group at Hattie C. Warner Elementary School recently finished a 19 by 3-foot mosaic that contains over a thousand different pieces.

“It takes up a lot of room,” Miles Johnson, an art teacher at Warner who led the project, said.

Warner families and students began putting the large mosaic together when school began in August.

“I figure at least 400 different people contributed a piece to it,” Johnson said.

Though many outside sources pitched in on the artwork, including education majors from a class Johnson teaches at the University of Kentucky, the Mosaic Madness Group did the bulk of it. Johnson said it took about eight weeks’ worth of envisioning, cutting and gluing to finish it.

Johnson started the Mosaic Madness Group, which consists of third, fourth and fifth-grade students, in August last year, and since then they have completed 15 different mosaic pieces varying in size and topic. 

Though this mosaic project is not the largest one Johnson has led, it is the biggest one with the greatest amount of detail and pieces.

“This one will be a very special one for my time as a teacher,” Johnson said.

When he began to draw up the detailed artwork, he said he wanted to do something that would emulate the entire school.

The mosaic, created by people of all ages, will soon be hung proudly in the school cafeteria for everyone to enjoy.

“I’m glad I have the opportunity to do all the different art projects with the students here,” Johnson said. “I’m just really a lucky guy.”
